Learn from Children

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

"From the lips of children and infants, you have ordained praise." (Psalm 8:2)

Discussion

Are you underestimating your children’s faith in God?

Children are able to trust and praise God without doubts or reservations. As we get older, many of us find this more and more difficult to do. Ask God to give you child-like faith, removing any barriers to having a closer walk with him. Jesus says, "See that you don’t look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in Heaven" (Mathew 18:10). Grown-up people’s hearts are hardened by the harsh reality of life as they become older and older in the matter of compassion and pure love. "Teach their children the decrees and laws and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform" (Exodus 18:20). Any sorrows, pains and wounds in the family, the society, or any part of the world are most timely received, compassionated, and acted by not grown-ups, but by children. They could do better in the field of compassion and love. We have to let them do so.

Sara, a grade one child has the habit of picking up pennies that she finds on the floor or outside. One day she picked up a cent from the side of a busy road on her way to school and passed it to her dad. Then she asked her dad, "Dad, do you know why I am collecting the pennies? Mom will deposit them in the bank and it could become a big amount. Then that could be given to the people in Haiti and Africa who are really in need." She has contributed five dollars from her savings towards the Haiti earthquake disaster fund.

Encourage children in the field of compassion by taking them to desolate people in poor homes. Allow them to interact with grandparents and have field trips to third world countries as vacation.

Prayer

Jesus, let us learn a lot from our children. Let us enjoy their deeds of innocence. Let us be an example to our children in compassion and love. Let us not dodge our duties and responsibilities towards our kids. Let our children be prudent in all walks of their life. We pray for the kids suffering in Egypt and other war fields. All we ask in the name of Jesus.

Amen.
