Listening

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

"Speak, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:10)

Discussion

Listen to your inner voice and lend an ear to others.

Life is an act of listening. The quality of your life depends on the quality of your listening.

James 1:19 - “Every man must be swift about hearing, slow about speaking, slow about wrath.”

Visit more, Listen more is the magic of healing. The effectiveness of alternative medicine and complementary medicine are mostly quackery. Yet they are popular. They have something that mainstream medicine does not.

Sir William Osler, one of the fathers of (real) medicine: “Care more particularly for the individual patient than for the special features of the disease.”

The industrialization of patient care often depersonalizes the process of treatment. The average length of an appointment with a British family doctor, for example, is 8 minutes. However, complementary and alternative therapists take longer. Patients reward them by believing (wrongly but usefully) that it is the specifics of the therapy that are bringing relief, rather than attention itself. Proper doctors could learn from this. Veterans have always known the importance of bedside manners (listening).

Proverbs 29:20 - “Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him."

'LISTENING'

- a poem written by a mental health service worker : Mike.

When God gave out brains
I thought He said trains - so I missed mine.

When God gave out looks
I thought He said books - so I didn’t get any

When God gave out noses
I thought He said roses - so I ordered a big red

when God gave out chins
I thought he said gins - so I ordered a large double one

when god gave out legs
I thought he said kegs - so I asked for large fat ones

when God gave out heads
I thought he said beds - so I asked for a big soft one.

Gosh, am I in a mess?

Prayer

Jesus, let us be a patient listener not a speaker. Let us listen to our inner voices that you speak in silence. We pray for those who are alone and in darkness with nobody to listen to their problems, sorrows, and feelings. May all in need be heard and answered by you. All we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
