Comforting Others

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.” (2 Corinthians 1:4)

Discussion

We need the most comfort when someone depart from us. Death is still a mystery to the world. The pain and sorrows associated with death will haunt the people till the end. The relief and comfort that come from the friends and relatives have an astounding effect that helps us to come out from the depression and sadness. Being comforted means not only to let us get out of troubles but also to receive strength, encouragement and to hope to deal with our troubles.

Jesus, in person, showed how we should comfort others in their bereavement. When he saw the weeping and wailing in the house of Lazarus, He too wept openly. Jesus showed that he cares enough for us to weep with us in our sorrows.

Sudden death of Mary’s husband, Dr. Mathew, was unbearable and a shock to her. She wrote a letter to her friend, a priest, after three weeks, “ Thank you so much for calling me and consoling me after my husband passed away……………. All these three weeks I have been very strong. But somehow tonight I am feeling very disturbed and deeply sad. .. Please pray for me, that God will give me strength to carry on. It is hard because I am alone. I feel so down right now. May God lift me up and walk with me.”

Immediately the priest responded and she was comforted. She wrote back: "Thank you so much for your immediate response. It was so comforting for me. I know my comfort is only in Jesus. He is for me, with me and in me. I too promise him that I will never leave him. And your response has quietened my soul. Thank you so much."

A trusted person stand with us in our sorrows and tears. God himself is standing with us with comfort. Are we the trusted friends today to the depressed and troubled? Nearly everyone want your presence and comfort. Take little time to comfort others when they need it most.

Prayer

Jesus, you are the true, trusted comfort for us. You are the resurrection and life. And you never leave us and abandon us as an orphans. You weep with us when we weep. Today we need your real presence and a word of comfort. Lord, we pray for those who are troubled and alone. Give them your spirit of consolation and friendship. We ask this in the name of Jesus.

Amen.
