Shunoyo - Assumption of St. Mary

Soonoyo Lent by Very Rev. Kuriakose Corepiscopa Moolayil
The Syrian Orthodox Church observes the Soonoyo lent in connection with the translation of St. Mary. The church observes different days and hours in honour of St. Mary, the blessed. Soonoyo lent is the mandatory one in connection with her death and translation to paradise, remembered on August 15.

Shunoyo Lent by H.E Mor Themotheos Thomas Metropolitan
Shunoyo lent is very old and is in memory of St. Mary. It is interesting to see that in all the ancient Churches, this lent is observed. Apart from our Church, the Roman Catholic, the Byzantine Churches and several others observe this lent. That points to the fact that this has a common origin, going back to the times when all Churches were one.

The Dormition Fast: Ending another year of grace in Our Lord
The Byzantine Church since at least the 5th century has practiced a period of fasting prior to the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. Christians of the East have always recognized the mystery of Our Lady’s Dormition, her ‘falling asleep’ at the end of her natural life when in a miraculous way she was assumed into heaven to sit with her Lord and our Lord.

Shunoyo (Dormition of the Theotokos) by Tenny Thomas
The Theotokos had now reached an advanced age. Her fervent and unceasing desire was to leave the body and be with her beloved Son and God. The Mother of God did not fear death, nor did she seek to avoid it. She knew that death had already been overcome by her Son and God.

The Feast of the Assumption (Shunoyo) of St. Mary by Fr. Mathai Varkey Puthukkunnathu
Beyond all heretical teachings and deviations, the prominence of Saint Mary is made clear in the words of Cyril of Alexandria, "I have been amazed that some are utterly in doubt as to whether or not the Holy Virgin is able to be called the Mother of God. For if our Lord Jesus Christ is God, how should the Holy Virgin who bore him not be the Mother of God?"

Assumption - Eastern Orthodox View
The feast of the Dormition or Falling-asleep of the Theotokos is celebrated on the fifteenth of August, preceded by a two-week fast. This feast, which is also sometimes called the Assumption, commemorates the death, resurrection and glorification of Christ's mother. It proclaims that Mary has been "assumed" by God into the heavenly kingdom of Christ in the fullness of her spiritual and bodily existence.

The Feast of the Dormition of Theotokos (August 15) by Fr. George Dion Dragas (Eastern Orthodox vs. Catholic)
The Orthodox Church has not accepted the Roman Catholic dogma of the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, which was promulgated by Pope Pius XII. The reasons for this rejection have been both theological and historical. The Roman Catholic Dogma of the Assumption is based on the earlier Marian dogma of the Immaculate Conception (that the Virgin was born immaculate, free from original sin) ...

Assumption of St. Mary by Rev. Dr. V Kurian Thomas Valiyaparambil
The Assumption into heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined dogma of most traditional Christian churches. The doctrine teaches that after the mother of Jesus died, she was taken up into heaven. This feast commemorates the death and assumption of St. Mary into heaven.

The presence of the THEOTOKOS in the Economy of Salvation - an Orthodox Approach by Rev. Fr. Dr. K. M. George
The Eastern tradition does not know any ‘Science of Mary.’ It recognizes that the earliest references to Mary were in connection with theological attempts to explain the mysteries of the Incarnation and the Church. These mysteries do not yield to easy definition or become the objects of any "Science".

The Assumption/Dormition: Mystery of Mary, Meaning of Life by Deacon Keith Fournier
This event is the natural progression in the life of the Blessed Virgin of Nazareth. Her 'Yes', her 'Fiat' of surrendered love, brought heaven to earth and opened earth to the heaven which received her. She is thus the sign of the Church’s future and provides the pattern of the Christian vocation. All who say “Yes” to her beloved Son - and live their lives in that surrendered love – bear Christ for the world and will join with her in the fullness of that communion of love.

Sermon for the Feast of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary by Alphonsus Liguori
This is considered to be a classic dissertation. It is believed to be one document cited by Pope in his declaration of the Catholic dogma of assumption.

Mary’s Assumption is hope for today’s society, says Pope Benedict XVI
Today there are those who live as if they were never to die or as if all should end with death. Some act as if humankind was master of its own destiny, as if God did not exist, going so far as to deny Him any place in our world. The great advances in science and technology, which have much improved humanity’s conditions, leave unanswered the innermost questions of the human soul.

Assumption Versus Dormition (Departure) by Zach George Arapura
The orthodox view of Assumption is that Mary died a natural death and her soul was received by Son and on the third day, after her death, her body was transported to heaven.

The Assumption and the World by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
The Assumption challenges the nothingness of the Mortician philosophers in a new way. The greatest task of the spiritual leaders today is to save mankind from despair, into which Sex and Fear of Death have cast it. The world that used to say, "Why worry about the next world, when we live in this one?" has finally learned the hard way that, by not thinking about the next life, one cannot even enjoy this life.

Mary's Assumption by Fr. Patrick Greenough, OFM
Catholic view of Assumption. The second Vatican Council in its dogmatic constitution on the Church Lumen Gentium, reaffirmed the dogma by stating, "the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, when her earthly life was over and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, that she might be more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of Lords and conqueror of sin and death."

The Dormition Of The Theotokos And Ever-Virgin Mary
Many believe that at the end of her life Mary was assumed bodily ‘into heaven’. This claim, magisterially entitled ‘The Doctrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary’, is a Latin concept.

Dormition of the Theotokos - Daivamathavinte Vaangippu perunal
by Mathew G M
We celeberate the Dormition of the Theotokos (Daiva Mathavinte Vaangippu Perunnal) on August 15th. Because of the importance of this feast the church teaches us to observe fasting from August 1st to August 15th known as the Dormition Fast.

Dormition of the Theotokos by Dn. Abraham George
On the feast of the dormition of the Mother of our God, what words or phrases can possibly describe the magnificence of her life? The Holy Church exalts her as the second Eve, the queens of the Saints, the second heaven, the preserver of the monastic’s and much more.

THEOTOKOS - The Mother of God by Jacob P Varghese
The designation and depiction of Mary as 'Theotokos' is ancient and venerable, beginning from the second century, gaining firm establishment by the fourth and fifth centuries. The title 'Theotokos' was made official by the III Ecumenical Council (Ephesus, 431 AD) which decreed that the Virgin should be honored by this name which confirms the Orthodox belief in the Incarnation: that Christ was both true God and true man.

On the Dormition of Our Supremely Pure Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary by St. Gregory Palamas
Both love and duty today fashion my homily for your charity. I am obliged by the sacred canons, to bring to your God-loving ears a saving word and thus to nourish your souls, but if there be any among those things that bind by obligation and love and can be narrated with praise for the Church, it is the great deed of the Ever-Virgin Mother of God.

St. John of Damascene: Homily I on the Assumption/Dormition
Neither human tongue nor angelic mind is able worthily to praise her through whom it is given to us to look clearly upon the Lord's glory. What then? Shall we be silent through fear of our insufficiency? Certainly not.

St. John of Damascene: Homily II on the Assumption/Dormition
There is no one in existence who is able to praise worthily the holy death of God's Mother, even if he should have a thousand tongues and a thousand mouths. Not if all the most eloquent tongues could be united would their praises be sufficient. She is greater than all praise. Since, however, God is pleased with the efforts of a loving zeal, and the Mother of God with what concerns the service of her Son, suffer me now to revert again to her praises.

St. John of Damascene: Homily III on the Assumption/Dormition
To-day she begins her second life through Him who was the cause of her first being. She gave a beginning, I mean, the life of the body, to Him who had no beginning in time, although the Father was the cause of His divine existence. Rejoice holy and divine Mount Sion, in which reposes the living divine mountain, the new Bethel, with its grace, human nature united with the Godhead.

Feast of the Assumption - A Homily (2001) by Fr. Robert Altier
Delivered on August 15, 2001. But the wonderful thing is she is also our mother, and she is our queen. As she glorifies God, she prays for each one of us, her children. When we see these readings today, we recognize that death indeed has been destroyed. We each need to enter into death, but we have the promise of our resurrection. We already see the promise being fulfilled in Our Lady and we ask her intercession that one day we will be able to be with her; that like her, we will behold God face to face, in the resurrected glory and the reunification of our body and soul; and that we will be able to be with her and glorify God for all eternity.

Feast of the Assumption - A Homily  (2002) by Fr. Robert Altier
Delivered on August 15, 2002. Right from the very beginning of humanity there has been a struggle between life and death. From the very first moments of human existence, Satan came down and tempted Adam and Eve, and they fell; they chose death over life. At that moment, death entered into human existence. It was not intended by God that we would die, but God has made our souls immortal. So even though the body will die, the soul will not.

Feast of the Assumption - A Homily  (2003) by Fr. Robert Altier
Delivered on August 15, 2003. As we celebrate today the glorious solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we have to recognize the importance of this feast and why we hold it in such honor. We hear in the second reading about Jesus being raised from the dead, and that following from Him will be each person in their proper order. When we think about Our Lord, Saint Paul makes very clear that He is the new Adam, and that just as death came through man so the resurrection of the dead will come through man also. Jesus is the first to rise from the dead, just as the sin that our first parents committed was ultimately the sin of Adam.

Feast of the Assumption - A Homily  (2004) by Fr. Robert Altier
Delivered on August 15, 2004. Indeed, Our Lady’s words in her Magnificat that all generations would call her blessed ring true in every single generation for the last 2,000 years. And for all eternity the same glory will be given to her because, of all the human creatures that God has made, there is none more blessed than she. There are none who are more holy, there are none who are more exalted, there are none who deserve the grace and the glory of God more than she, and God has blessed her beyond any other human person.

The Dignity of the Human Body - A Homily (2005) by Fr. Robert Altier
Delivered on August 15, 2005. But we too, being members of the Mystical Body of Christ, are to share in the crushing of the head of Satan. He was there trying to devour her Child. Well, since we are members of the Mystical Body, and she who gave birth to the head gave birth to the whole body as well, we are the ones right now that Satan is trying to destroy. Tragically, he is doing a pretty good job of it.

"The Third Word of the Cross: Family" by: Rev. Adrian Dieleman
Like her son, Mary was not unacquainted with grief. Not at all! What sorrow it must have caused her when she had to lay her new-born son in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn. What anguish must have been hers when she learned of Herod's plan to destroy her child. What hardship she faced when she was forced to flee to Egypt and stay there for several years.

Jesus’ Care For His Mother by Stephen Felker
Many times in Scripture the New Testament writers make an appeal to us based upon the example of Christ. Jesus is our example in so many, including the way He honored, and cared for His mother. Jesus knew and practiced Exodus 20:12, the 5th Commandment, “Honor your father and your mother….”

Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary - by Fr. Eugene Lobo S.J.
Today we celebrate the feast of Mary's Assumption into heaven. She was a model disciple open to God's grace. The feast celebrates the special place that Mary has in the life of the Church. This place is first of all defined by her being chosen to be the mother of Jesus, his only human parent. This alone gives her a uniqueness which is shared by no other person who has ever lived.  ...

Solemn Feast of the Assumption by Fr. Andrew
On this Solemn Feast of the Assumption of Mary, we remember that our Lord Jesus drew her to himself at the end of her life. For my homily I want to share with you Pope Benedict's words on the Blessed Mother as he introduced the Angelus at the end of the World Youth Day in Australia. ...

Virgin Mary, Mother of God
By Mrs. Cicily Sunny, M.A., B.Ed., MSE

Introduction

This eBook is based on the author's readings about Virgin Mary in the books 'The Poem of the Man-God' by Maria Valtorta and 'The Signs of the Times' by Benny Punnathura.

'The Poem of the Man-God' is full of the visions received by the author starting with the life of Mary's parents, focused on the life of Jesus and ending with Mary's assumption and the Acts of the Apostles. That book reveals several of the unknown mysteries of God through visions. It consists of five volumes in five thousand pages in English and has been translated into several languages. This book will definitely bring us closer to God and will enhance our spirituality. The visions elaborate the events in the New Testament with appropriate occasions and settings which make it more concrete.

'The Signs of the Times' was written with reference to fourteen other books. It focuses on Mary's evangelization of the world through messages given to more than three hundred people around the world through visions and apparitions. The messages about anti-Christ, God's final clearance through three days of darkness, and the pouring of the Holy Spirit are the most appealing mysteries in that book. Reading of that book will enable us to prepare ourselves for the end.

[Editor's Note: 'The Poem of the Man-God' by Maria Valtorta is written based on the Catholic Teachings on St. Mary. Orthodox Church does not subscribe to some dogmas such as Immaculate Conception, Mary's Assumption without Death or Co-redemption status for Mary as taught by the Catholic Church. Please read the book with the understanding that not all that are stated here are accepted by Orthodox Church.]
