Crying Over Money

by Dr David Jeremiah

Give me neither poverty nor riches--feed me with the food allotted to me. Proverbs 30:8

Recommended Reading: Proverbs 30:7-9

The headline said: "Lottery Winner Dies Penniless After Heart Attack from Money Worries." It was about a British baker who won so much money in the lottery that he went on a spending spree. After blowing most of the money on property, alcohol, and horse racing, he squandered the rest on fraudulent investments. His financial woes led to a heart attack, ending his life at age 58. Before his death, he admitted, "What's the point of having money if it sends you to bed crying. I thought the lotto win was going to be the answer to my dreams. Now those dreams have turned to dust."

This gentleman's folly is a reminder to keep a heavenly perspective on our finances.

To embody a biblical view of money, consider the prayer of Agur in Proverbs 30. He desired God's perfect will relating to his net worth--neither excessive wealth lest he become self-sufficient, nor abject poverty lest he be tempted to steal. With thanks we should acknowledge the blessings that flow from the Father and in turn bless those around us.

How simple. How wise. How safe. How healthy.

"These verses contain the only prayer in the book of Proverbs. The prayer is short and to the point...He was saying, in effect, "Give me this day my daily bread." William MacDonald
