There is a Purpose for Everything

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

"You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good." (Genesis 50:20)

Discussion

Do you believe there is a purpose for all the incidents in your life?

In the eyes of human beings, all steps of an individual are purpose oriented, even a calamity. "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and called according to his purpose for them" (Romans 8:28). The throwing of Baby Moses in the river, the selling of Joseph to the merchant, the crucifixion of Jesus on the Cross and his death all have ultimately led to the emancipation of the entire humanity from the clutches of evil forces that could have been seen and unseen.

God brings good from evil for those who trust him. Life has been linked to an elaborate tapestry being woven on the loom. It requires many different colors - some bright and beautiful, others dark and sombre. It is when they are placed and blended together that they contribute to the beauty of the pattern.

Not until the loom is silent
And the shuttle ceases to fly

Shall God unroll the pattern
And explain the reason why

The dark threads are just as needful
In the weavers skilful hand

Sometimes there are threads of disappointment
Dark threads of sorrows and pain

But, hold fast, God still holds the shuttle
There'll be bright threads of victory again

The day is almost over
And the last thread is almost in place

Then we will stand and adore the beauty
Of a robe that was woven by grace.

Louis Braille was born in 1809 in France. When he was 3 years old, he walked into his father's workshop, a saddle-maker. No one was there. He took the sharpest tool, grabbed a piece of leather and poked it. He was not sure if the tool had pierced the leather, so he held the leather up to look, and poked again. His mother heard the terrible screaming. Running to the workshop, she found that her child had stabbed himself in the eye.

The little boy went blind permanently. That led him to be in the school for the blind. There, he worked for 3 years for the invention of his own system of design with one touch of the fingertip to feel each letter at once, as sighted people see a whole letter at a glance - the Braille system of reading for the blind.
The "Braille" system has opened up millions of books - novels, school books, historical, mysteries, even nursery rhymes, in more than 50 languages, to people who can't see and read. The boy from Coupvray in France, whose life seemed bleak by that childhood accident, succeeded in giving to the blind, the world of reading at their fingertips.

"My flesh may be destroyed, yet from this body I will see God." (Job 19:26)

Prayer

Jesus, give us the inner sense to understand the purpose of ups and downs in our lives. We pray for those who are in sorrow and pain without seeing any purpose in their sufferings in life. Let each one of us support and work together as one family without any discrimination. We remember the great soul of Louis Braille and all the blind people. All we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
