The Road to Emmaus

Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. - Luke 24:13-15 (NKJV)

The Hana Highway is a 64.4-mile long stretch of Hawaii Highway that connects Kahului with the town of Hana in east Maui.

In my opinion, the Road to Hana is the most spectacular drive in Maui (one of the Hawaiian Islands). It's a curvy coastal road with views of cliffs, beaches, waterfalls, and miles and miles of rainforest. (It reminds me of the trip to Kumily from Kottayam. What the Thekkady trip lacks is the spectacular beach views Mauian coast.)

It is a well paved road now, but you do need to be very careful when you drive on it because of the many sharp curves and one-lane bridges. (The one-lane bridges are maintained for historical interest, I think; but they also sport spectacular views of waterfalls.

Around the time of Christ, this road was probably just like the Road from Jerusalem to Emmaus, a difficult pathway connecting small hamlets, while still allowing one to enjoy the beauty of the creation of God and rest under the shade of the majestic trees lining the road. When I think of the Road to Emmaus, the first thing that comes to my mind is the Road to Hana. Road to Emmaus is 7 miles and takes a day to walk, the road to Hane is also a one day trip by car.

5. Christ in Samaria (John 4:31-42)

We discover that the Holy Spirit has caused this historical narrative which traces the actions of the Savior in Samaria, and which records the instructions He there gave to His disciples, to embody a perfect outline which sets forth the leading features of this present Era of Grace, during which God is taking out of the Gentiles a people for His name. ...

6. A View to the Harvest

The apostle Paul said in 1 Cor. 3, "I have planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth." The one who plants and the one who waters both have a common purpose, to see a harvest for God. ...

8. Mass on the Move: The Hidden Mass on the Road to Emmaus

Today's Gospel of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13ff) does more than present a resurrection appearance. It also presents the Mass in seminal form as I will show. In doing this, Luke and the Holy Spirit teach us that the Mass is the essential and most vivid way that we encounter Christ now. ...

9. Emmaus: From Despair to Joy

It was no ordinary grace before meals that the Lord had offered that evening in Emmaus. Compare the words used here to the words used at the last supper: he took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples (Luke 22:19). It was in the sacrament of his body and blood that they finally recognized him. ...

10. Home to Emmaus

Having followed Jesus all the way to Jerusalem, they've seen it all come to a horrific end. Their walk home was marked by grief and confusion. They, like the other disciples, were now also living with a sense of regret for all they did not do that they could have, should have done. ...
