Sorrowful, Yet Always Rejoicing

by Dr David Jeremiah

For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:10

Recommended Reading 2 Cor. 6:3-10

In an old missionary magazine, Dr. B. L. Whitman of Colby University wrote about the paradoxes of the Christian life and ministry. "We cannot move a step without working our way through paradoxes," Whitman observed. "Strength through weakness, greatness through littleness, self through others, joy through pain, glory through abasement, light through darkness, gain of all through loss of all...It is worthwhile to get into the atmosphere of these."1

This is the atmosphere Christians breathe. The apostle Paul said that he felt "as chastened, and not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and [yet] possessing all things" (2 Corinthians 6:9-10, KJV).

We sometimes grow confused by life's paradoxes--strength through weakness, comfort through suffering, life through death, glory through shame. But how encouraging to know that Jesus Christ is Lord of all that's paradoxical. He turns the world on its head, bringing good out of bad and strength out of weakness.
