Watch out and Beware of the Leaven…

Gospel: St. Matthew 16:5-12

I. The Lord warns against teaching that breeds hypocrisy.

A. Christ issues a double warning.

B. Is this warning still relevant in these days?

C. The disciples’ reaction demonstrates how very much needed is Christ’s warning. - Matthew 6:25.

II. The Pharisees and Sadducees bred religious hypocrisy.

A. They each built their own religious system within Judaism.

Mark 7:5; Galatians 1:14; Matthew 23:1-3.

B. The leaven of hypocrisy.

Luke 12:1-2; Matthew 23:5-7; Colossians 2:20-23.

III. The Church must continue to beware of the leaven of hypocrisy.

A. Jesus’ warning is for his disciples is applicable even today, more than 2000 years later.

Ephesians 2:8-10; Galatians 5:4-9.

B. Because it is the truth that sets us free, any leaven of hypocrisy, of wickedness, can corrupt us.

John 8:31-32; 1Corinthians 5:6-8.

C. Do we have enough bread for the mission?

D. Take heed and beware of hypocrisy.

Leviticus 26:3-5.
