Birth of Jesus

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

"Jesus was born in Bethlehem." (Mathew 2:1)

Discussion

How do you know the birth of Christ?

Bethlehem is a small town five miles south of Jerusalem. Bethlehem of Judea had been prophesied as the Messiah’s birth place in Micah 5:2. ("But you, O Bethlehem Ephrata, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you, one whose origins are from the distant past.")

Although eternal, Christ entered human history as a man, Jesus of Nazareth, so that we all could experience God in person of his heavenly love and touch. It is not a mental makeup or fantasy. This is a first-hand experience intended for all by the Creator. The trio group - the shepherds, the angels, and the wise men had seen God as a helpless child in a manger in Bethlehem with Mary and Joseph. They all saw him, touched him, held him, kissed him, and then worshipped Him as God and King. This is not accidental, but a real earthly personal experience.

A woman in a small Arkansas community was a single mom with a frail baby. Her neighbor would stop by every few days and baby-sit the child to enable the mom to go shopping. After a few weeks, her neighbor shared something more valuable than her time, she shared her faith, and the woman became a follower of Christ. The friends of the young mother objected to this and asked her, "Do you know what those people teach?" "Here is what I know," she told them, "They held my baby."

Always read the lips of the needy. Help them, don’t wait for them to ask. Keep the placement of others' happiness above your own.

Prayer

Jesus, let your birth be a reality in the life of all. We pray for those who don’t know where to ask for help, and whom to trust. Let us be a Christ for the poor, sick, and the needy. All we ask in the name of the Babe in Bethlehem - Jesus Christ - the Lord and God.

Amen.
