Fair Justice

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

"Do not prevent justice, do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the rich and powerful. Always judge people fairly." (Leviticus 19:15)

Do you feel you are a victim of injustice?

Independent and impartial judiciary is the hallmark of Christianity and the characteristic of God. People are in lawlessness and anarchy where there is no justice. Justice should prevail in homes, churches, jobs, and at large in all realms of human life. The judge of all the judges is God. Judge according to the justice in practice at the court of the creator. The eternal principles inscribed in the scriptures and in the conscience in the hearts of all human beings should be meticulously practiced by the judges who are appointed and anointed by God through the human institutions.

A free and independent judiciary is something that the public can be proud of. The judges should have the courage and the ability to make difficult decisions at the most challenging situations even at the cost of their lives to save the society from the predators and the scoundrels. If anyone misses his judgement here on earth, don't forget that the predators and the culprit cannot escape from the court of God. "But let justice flow like a river, and let righteousness flow like a stream that never stops" (Amos 5:24).

On 21st March 2011, Tel Aviv District Court in Israel sentenced former President of Israel Moshe Katsav to 7 years in prison for rape and sexual harassment and ordered him to pay NIS 100,000 to the victim, Aleph. Netanyahu, the Prime Minister says, "An important day for justice in Israel." He continues, "Everyone is equal before the law. It showed that there is equality before the law and that no one is above the law. It also showed that women are equal and it is forbidden to harm them. A justice of the rule of law." The judge also blamed Katsav's behavior for the delay in the indictment, "Katsav's high rank can't be taken to his credit, on the contrary it makes his acts more severe, the higher the rank, the greater the disappointment." A former president sentenced to jail for rape is no silly thing.

"How terrible it will be for those who make unfair laws and those who write laws that make life hard for people" (Isaiah 10:1). Where there is justice there is peace, love, joy, prosperity, and progress. Stand always for fair play and justice.

Jesus. let your justice flow like a stream towards those who are suffering injustice in homes, jobs, and other areas of life. Let our churches be the fountains of justice. Raise good judges to judge over us. Let our courts be the transmitter of fair justice to the victims. No innocents should be punished or go to the death chamber. All we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
