Losing Focus on Eternity and Eternal Values

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

"So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever." (2 Corinthians 4:18)

Which would you prefer - the Oscars in Hollywood or wash sinks in an AIDS home?

Our world is in the grip of epicurean philosophy of eat, drink and be merry. We are losing ground of the vision of eternity and eternal values. An entertainment world of hara-kiri (Self-destruction) looms over the horizon. Wealth, pleasure, fame, idols which people of this world adore are all to endure. But after a while, they will soon vanish away. The wealth of this world like beauty, money, fame, education, talent and fitness charm is enviable. When the glamour begins to diminish, we stress and worry over losing it. "Charm can fool you, and beauty can trick you but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised" (Proverbs 31:30). The parents and the education system are now inclined more towards training to make Oscar-like winners in different fields. Time, energy, money and even sometimes religion/religious practices are sacrificed at the altar of worldly wealth. "People who boast of their wealth donít understand; they will die, just like animals." (Psalm 49:20)

Legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor, a two-time Oscar winner and Hollywood beauty, whose success was sometimes over shadowed by her tumultuous personal life. She died at the age of 79 after a long battle with congestive heart failure. She lived a glamorous life and was married 8 times in all, with great passion, hunger, and love. She never wanted to be an actress but was pushed into by her mother, former actress Sara Sothern Taylor. As she grew older and movie roles became fewer, the actress once famed for beauty, began drinking and grew addicted to prescription drugs. Her weight ballooned and she was lampooned by comedians. She entered the Betty Ford Center in California to overcome her addiction. But later she dedicated her life to serve the less fortunate than herself by becoming the champion of AIDS research.

"For, to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21). "Seek the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need." (Mathew 6:33)

Jesus, let us have the vision of the mortality of worldly wealth and immortality of eternal wealth of love, compassion, good character and moral values. We pray for those who struggle to live in thy path. Let your spirit of courage abide with us. Let us give respect, training, and emulate the ways of godly people. All we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
