By Rev. Dr. Curian Kaniyamparambil
"Therefore whoever eats this bread and drink this cup of Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup" (1 Cori. 11:27, 28).
What have you to examine? What does it mean? A person has to examine if he or she is sinful or not. If you are sinful you are not worthy to receive Jesus Christ. Now the question is, how to know if one is sinful or not. What is sin?
"Sin is transgression of law " (1 John 3:4) "He who sins is of devil" (1 John 3:8) "All unrighteousness is sin" (1 John 5:17) "Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin" (James 4:17) "Whatever not from faith is sin" (Rom. 14:23) "All sins are from ones heart." (Mat 15:19) "a desire has been conceived it gives birth to sin" ( James 1:15) It is the works of darkness - (Eph 5:11) Sin can easily ensnare us (Heb 12:1) It entered the world through Adam (Genesis 3:5; Rom 5:12) There are hidden and public sins (1 Tim 5:24) We should confess all our sins (1 John 1:9)
So we learned what sin is and how to cleanse our sins, and thus purify us to be worthy to participate in the Holy Eucharist.
